Wor Flags Season Review (2021/22)

For sure, this has been an odd season all things considered. We’ve had both ends of the spectrum from no displays to some of the best that the country (the world?) has seen, we’ve seen a group of volunteers desperate to support their club, and a set of supporters with equal amounts of passion.

We’ll skip over months of the season and arrive on a balmy October night when Wor Flags decided that we would need to mark the Spurs game with a large display in the Gallowgate with Big River display for the new Owners.

The season is now on!

As a group, we’ve always been very keen to support the club in the best way we could, we’ve had involvement in encouragement of singing and as the group name implies, our goal is to encourage support by the medium of flags and flag displays.

In common with the new owners, the season started for us with very little planning (we do all of our best work under passion-driven deadlines), and battered a load of ideas for each display across a WhatsApp group, although, to be fair, much of our planning was done in the dark corridors of the Gallowgate end, going late into the night, often the early morning.

We always try to make displays which will challenge, will motivate, and will stimulate, both in terms of how much effort we put into a display, but how it looks to the supporters and the players.

For each match this season, we have tried to go bigger and better, expanding from 1 stand to all 4, encouraging fans from all areas to take part in displays, and thus encouraging them to join in with the building of the atmosphere in the ground. Some of the more difficult displays have involved lots of people putting foils on individual seats so all supporters on the ground had something to feel sort of the experience.

The Arsenal game was by far the most difficult one to set up given the complexity, but we feel that it was very well received by all.  This year has been one that few will forget.
